GW501516 acts as an agonist at the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta, a nuclear receptor that regulates gene expression. Activation shifts transcription toward genes involved in fatty acid uptake, oxidation, and energy expenditure. The compound does not bind the androgen receptor and therefore differs from anabolic steroids and SARMs. In rodent models, this metabolic shift has been linked to increased running endurance and reduced fat accumulation. The exact downstream pathways in humans remain incompletely characterized.
Early clinical research explored GW501516 for lipid disorders, obesity, and diabetes. Some short-term human studies reported changes in HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. The development program was discontinued after rodent studies showed dose-dependent tumor formation in multiple tissues, including liver, bladder, stomach, and skin. These findings raised concerns about long-term cancer risk in humans. Because human exposure data are limited, the clinical significance of the rodent tumors remains uncertain.
Published human data are sparse and mostly come from early-phase trials. Those studies examined short-term changes in lipids, glucose, and exercise capacity, but they were not large enough to establish efficacy or long-term safety. Some animal experiments reported increased running endurance, yet such findings do not prove a performance benefit in people. Anti-doping laboratories detect GW501516 and its metabolites in urine or blood using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Detection windows depend on dose, sample type, and individual metabolism. The method is sensitive enough to identify trace residues in tested samples.
Laboratory handling focuses on identity, purity, and stability. Reference standards are typically stored cold and dry, protected from light, because solutions can degrade over time. Analytical checks may use high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection or mass spectrometry. Impurities and related substances can be separated chromatographically and compared with a known standard. Because cardarine is not an approved drug, compendial monographs are absent, and laboratories often rely on in-house methods. Reported purity varies among unregulated products and should not be assumed from a label.

Cardarine is a common name for GW501516, an investigational compound developed in the 1990s for metabolic conditions. It acts as an agonist at peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta, a nuclear receptor involved in lipid and energy metabolism. The compound is frequently mislabeled as a selective androgen receptor modulator, or SARM, but its molecular target is different. GW501516 reached early clinical testing before development was discontinued. It has no approved therapeutic use in any country. The name cardarine is not a formal international nonproprietary name.
Regulatory treatment varies, but cardarine is not approved as a medicine. Sports authorities list GW501516 as a prohibited substance, and it is banned at all times under the World Anti-Doping Agency code. Many countries restrict sales for human consumption, while online vendors market it as a research chemical. Such products may lack purity data, and their actual contents can differ from the label. Purchasing or possessing cardarine may carry legal consequences depending on jurisdiction. The compound is not a dietary supplement ingredient in regulated markets.
Clinical development stopped after rodent studies showed tumors at multiple sites. Whether those findings predict human cancer risk remains an open question, but they led sponsors to discontinue programs. Human safety data are limited to small, short-term studies that were not designed to assess cancer risk. Reported effects in those studies included changes in blood lipids, but the evidence is insufficient for medical use. Long-term consequences of nonmedical use are not well characterized. Questions about dose, duration, and individual susceptibility remain unresolved.
Cardarine is prohibited in competitive sport under the World Anti-Doping Agency code, where it is classified as a metabolic modulator. It is not approved as a prescription medicine in the United States, European Union, or other major markets. Regulatory action has focused on its presence in sports and in products marketed as research chemicals. Because it has no accepted medical indication, supply is often unregulated. This status creates legal and safety uncertainties for anyone who encounters the substance.
Anti-doping laboratories detect GW501516 and its metabolites using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Urine is the most common matrix, though blood and dried blood spots may also be used in some programs. Detection depends on factors such as dose, timing, metabolism, and the sensitivity of the assay. Published methods describe limits of detection in the low nanogram per milliliter range for related compounds. Exact detection windows are not fixed for all situations and remain an area of ongoing study.
Products sold as cardarine have been found to contain incorrect compounds, variable amounts, or no active ingredient at all. Independent testing is required to verify identity and purity. Common analytical approaches include high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance for structural confirmation. These methods can distinguish GW501516 from related PPAR agonists and from unrelated steroids. For regulators and researchers, such verification is central to interpreting both biological results and adverse event reports.
At Alan Gross's espionage trial in 2011, the Cuban government prosecutors alleged that Alan Gross was running a secret program for USAID called the "Cuba democracy program." The prosecution said that Gross had been coordinating with Akram Elias about this project, and at their meeting in December 2009, they discussed extending USAID's development program into Freemasonry in Cuba. The prosecution also presented evidence at the trial of two flash drives that contained material relating to projects "against the Cuban state." In 2004, they alleged that Alan Gross smuggled a video camera to Grand Master José Manuel Collera Vento, which originated from the office of Marc Wachtenheim. That office, they pointed out, was a block away from the White House. In 2011, Grand Master Collera Venta went on a series of Cuban television broadcasts called Las Razones de Cuba, in which he publicly admitted that he had been working for the Cuban government as a counterintelligence officer his entire life, and that he had only been planted as Grand Master so that the Cuban government could monitor Freemasons. On April 1, 2011, the Cuban government awarded José Manuel Collera Vento with the Escudo Pinareño (English: Shield of Pinar del Rio), the highest award of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power in Pinar del Río. This was awarded for his services to the state. Exiled Cuban Freemasons called this a betrayal of the institution of Freemasonry itself.
By the end of the 20th century in North America, few new doctors went directly from medical school into independent, unsupervised medical practice, and more state and provincial governments began requiring one or more years of postgraduate training for medical licensure. Residencies are traditionally hospital-based, and in the middle of the 20th century, residents would often live (or "reside") in hospital-supplied housing. "Call" (night duty in the hospital) was sometimes as frequent as every second or third night for up to three years. Pay was minimal beyond room, board, and laundry services. It was assumed that most young men and women training as physicians had few obligations outside of medical training at that stage of their careers. The first year of practical patient-care-oriented training after medical school has long been termed "internship". Even as late as the middle of the twentieth century, most physicians went into primary care practice after a year of internship. Residencies were separate from internship, often served at different hospitals, and only a minority of physicians did residencies. In the United States, the Libby Zion case, which led to the Libby Zion Law, garnered attention in 1984, shed light on the demanding work hours imposed on medical residents. Responding to this concern, the Association of American Medical Colleges released a position statement in 1988, recommending a cap of 80 work hours per week for residents.
=== Itching === Itching tends not to be a severe problem when opioids are used for pain relief, but antihistamines are useful for counteracting itching when it occurs. Non-sedating antihistamines such as fexofenadine are often preferred as they avoid increasing opioid induced drowsiness. However, some sedating antihistamines such as orphenadrine can produce a synergistic pain relieving effect permitting smaller doses of opioids be used. Consequently, several opioid/antihistamine combination products have been marketed, such as Meprozine (meperidine/promethazine) and Diconal (dipipanone/cyclizine), and these may also reduce opioid induced nausea.
Patients starting morphine may experience nausea and vomiting (generally relieved by a short course of antiemetics such as phenergan). Pruritus (itching) may require switching to a different opioid. Constipation occurs in almost all patients on opioids, and laxatives (lactulose, macrogol-containing or co-danthramer) are typically co-prescribed. Opioid tolerance should not be confused with opioid-induced hyperalgesia. The symptoms of these two conditions can appear very similar but the mechanism of action is different. Opioid-induced hyperalgesia is when exposure to opioids increases the sensation of pain (hyperalgesia) and can even make non-painful stimuli painful (allodynia).

Floating villi float freely in the intervillous space. They exhibit a bi-layered epithelium consisting of cytotrophoblasts with overlaying syncytium (syncytiotrophoblast). Anchoring (stem) villi stabilize the mechanical integrity of the placental-maternal interface.
== Composite materials == Another approach to increasing adsorption in MOFs is to alter the system in such a way that chemisorption becomes possible. This functionality has been introduced by making a composite material, which contains a MOF and a complex of platinum with activated carbon. In an effect known as hydrogen spillover, H2 can bind to the platinum surface through a dissociative mechanism which cleaves the hydrogen molecule into two hydrogen atoms and enables them to travel down the activated carbon onto the surface of the MOF. This innovation produced a threefold increase in the room-temperature storage capacity of a MOF; however, desorption can take upwards of 12 hours, and reversible desorption is sometimes observed for only two cycles. The relationship between hydrogen spillover and hydrogen storage properties in MOFs is not well understood but may prove relevant to hydrogen storage.
On March 2, 1955, a group of executives from the delegations of the conference gathered at the Hall of Mirrors in the Presidential Palace, where they were received by President Fulgencio Batista. The group included the Grand Officers of the Grand Lodge of Cuba, the Grand Master of Cuba, and executive officers from CMI. Also present were Minister of Agriculture Andrés Domingo Morales del Castillo, and Fidel Barreto. They shook hands with Batista. Batista thanked them for their work, and praised the executives for the smooth success of the conference. President Batista offered his congratulations on the consecration of the Masonic Temple, and admitted that he thought it was "...a majestic structure rising on the city.... [it] stands as a source of legitimate pride not only for Cuban Freemasonry but for that of the entire American continent." Batista pledged that he would assist the Grand Lodge of Cuba wherever he could. He noted, "...in accordance with Masonic principles..." that his Presidential Administration would be dedicated to the preserving freedom of expression, the free interplay of ideas in society and in the economic spheres, fraternity among Cubans, and equality between men and women, regardless of class.

Bicalutamide more than blocks the effects of the increased testosterone levels that it induces in men, which is evidenced by its dose-dependent antiandrogenic effects (e.g., PSA decreases) and by the fact that monotherapy with the drug is about as effective as GnRH analogue therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer. However, in contrast, the effects of the elevated estrogen levels remain unopposed by bicalutamide, and this is importantly involved in the feminizing side effects (e.g., gynecomastia) of the drug in men. Testosterone levels decline with age in men and younger men have higher testosterone levels on average than older men. Men with prostate cancer treated with bicalutamide are relatively elderly. The increases in testosterone levels with NSAAs like flutamide and bicalutamide may result in greater absolute levels of testosterone and estradiol in younger men than in older men. In one study that administered flutamide, free testosterone levels in young men increased from about 26 pg/mL at baseline to about 34 pg/mL with flutamide (+31%) and in elderly men from about 16 pg/mL at baseline to about 21 pg/mL (+31%) with flutamide. Hence, free testosterone levels with flutamide were approximately 1.6-fold higher in young men than in elderly men in this study. In the case of estradiol, total estradiol levels in young men increased from about 26 pg/mL at baseline to about 45 pg/mL with flutamide (+73%) and in elderly men changed from about 31 pg/mL to about 30 pg/mL (–3%).
== Diseases related to hemoglobin == Hemoglobin deficiency can be caused either by a decreased amount of hemoglobin molecules, as in anemia, or by decreased ability of each molecule to bind oxygen at the same partial pressure of oxygen. Hemoglobinopathies (genetic defects resulting in abnormal structure of the hemoglobin molecule) may cause both. In any case, hemoglobin deficiency decreases blood oxygen-carrying capacity. Hemoglobin deficiency is, in general, strictly distinguished from hypoxemia, defined as decreased partial pressure of oxygen in blood, although both are causes of hypoxia (insufficient oxygen supply to tissues). Other common causes of low hemoglobin include loss of blood, nutritional deficiency, bone marrow problems, chemotherapy, kidney failure, or abnormal hemoglobin (such as that of sickle-cell disease). The ability of each hemoglobin molecule to carry oxygen is normally modified by altered blood pH or CO2, causing an altered oxygen–hemoglobin dissociation curve. However, it can also be pathologically altered in, e.g., carbon monoxide poisoning. Decrease of hemoglobin, with or without an absolute decrease of red blood cells, leads to symptoms of anemia. Anemia has many different causes, although iron deficiency and its resultant iron deficiency anemia are the most common causes in the Western world. As absence of iron decreases heme synthesis, red blood cells in iron deficiency anemia are hypochromic (lacking the red hemoglobin pigment) and microcytic (smaller than normal). Other anemias are rarer.
==== Poland ==== The first Polish Taco Bell store was opened in 1993. Following an aggressive campaign of expansion, Taco Bell's efforts soon withered, and the chain withdrew from Poland shortly thereafter. In 2026, AmRest announced, that Taco Bell will return to the Polish market. The first new Taco Bell restaurant is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026, with additional locations to follow over time.

It targets PPARδ, a nuclear receptor involved in lipid and energy metabolism. It does not act primarily on androgen receptors. This distinction separates it from SARMs.
Rodent studies found dose-dependent tumors in several organs. The sponsor discontinued the program over cancer concerns. Human risk from long-term use remains unknown.
Controlled human endurance trials are lacking. Animal studies show increased exercise capacity under some conditions. Anecdotal reports are not equivalent to clinical evidence.
Anti-doping and clinical laboratories commonly use liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The method can identify GW501516 and its metabolites in urine or blood. Detection depends on sample timing and the amount present.
